“Inspired by the
colors of seasons and travel, I mix a palette from
yellow, blue, magenta and white silkscreen paints.
Paint is applied to white cotton fabric…texture and
patterns are added using spoons, brushes, home-made
stamps, bamboo pens and monoprints. Fiber reactive
procion dyes and resists on muslin and silks are
used to create more unique fabrics. Working
improvisationally when cutting, piecing and
collaging, clues are taken from the markings and
colors in the fabric. They are like little maps or
guides to the next piece of fabric put down. Pieces
are then layered with batting and a backing before
being machine quilted. Embellishment…beads,
buttons, sticks and stitches are added for
additional layers of color and texture.
Using each of these
steps in the creative process, I am constantly
reassessing and tweaking my pieces. Even ironing
can change the movement of a piece which adds to my
surprise as I work with my wildly colorful fabrics
to balance line, movement and shape.”
